Each year, people die or are seriously injured as a result of fire in the workplace. Fire can cost businesses vast amounts of money, sometimes causing them to close permanently. It is vital for businesses to ensure that their premises meet fire safety regulations, while ensuring all employees and visitors know what action to take in the event of fire.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) requires the ‘responsible person’ (employer, occupier or owner) to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire and ensure safe escape for both employees and visitors. The FSO requires the responsible person to:

Fire Safety Awareness (CIEH Level 1 Award)

This qualification will benefit anyone in a work environment as it provides candidates with an understanding of the key principles of fire safety, including measures to prevent fires occurring and actions to be taken in the event that a fire does break out. It is appropriate equally for those with no specific fire-safety role within the workplace and as an introduction for those who intend to move on to further fire-safety training. It will also benefit those who are starting a new job – as part of an induction programme.

Successful completion of the training programme and assessment will enable candidates to develop:
• general knowledge and understanding of fire safety in the workplace
• a foundation knowledge of the risk controls associated with fire in the workplace
• knowledge of the main types of fire safety equipment.
Assessment: 15 multiple choice questions
Duration: Half Day

Fire Safety Principles (CIEH Level 2 Award)

This qualification will benefit anyone in the workplace who has been appointed to carry out fire safety tasks on behalf of the employer. It is particularly suitable for employees hoping to develop their basic fire safety awareness and undertake specific fire safety roles (for example as fire wardens/ marshals or similar) in order to assist their employer to manage fire risk. It takes a detailed look at fire hazards and corresponding control measures, outlines the procedures for fire risk assessments and fire safety inspections, and offers guidance on the use of fire safety equipment and the
implementation of emergency procedures, including the safe evacuation of people in a defined area of responsibility.

Successful completion of the training programme and assessment will enable candidates to develop knowledge and understanding of:
• fire risk and control
• the principles and practice of fire safety
• the role of the nominated fire warden.
